Lecture Series
The Cardiovascular
Pathology Training Grant (CVP) does require attendance at the Biomedical
Research Integrity Lecture Series for all fellows. We also encourage fellows to
provide input into the content of the series. We have received good feedback in
the past especially about the more formal topics such as authorship,
intellectual property and interactions with industry. Dr. Albert Berger, the
Associate Dean for Scientific Affairs, welcomes student suggestions for this
series.
Vascular Biology Breakfast Club
The Breakfast Club
is a lecture series denominated as Path 552, Anatomic Pathology Course that,
though listed as a course, is actually an informal one that features both
invited lecturers as well as UW faculty, fellows and CVP trainees. Trainees are
expected to present their research in the Breakfast Club, held Tuesday mornings
during the fall, winter and spring quarters. Special lectures may also be held
during other days of the week and during the summer quarter. Check schedules at
the website
www.uwcvb.org. Administrative support is provided by the office of Chuck
Murry and funded by the reaction to Injury grant and the CVP Training Grant.
Dealing
with Issues
Possible issues
requiring action include:
a. Questions of accuracy of
scientific data
b. Questions of authorship of papers
c. Relationships of academic to industrial research
d. Patent issues
e. Conflicts with PI about research directions
f. Rights of fellows
g. Rights of other lab personnel
CVP encourages trainees to use the faculty of the training grant as a resource for any issues that may arise vis-à-vis scientific integrity. If for any reason you feel uncomfortable in discussing an issue of scientific integrity with your mentor, you may contact Dr. Schwartz, the Principal Investigator of this program. Pre-doctoral fellows should utilize their supervisory committee including the official graduate faculty representative who has been appointed to be your advocate. You may also contact any other member of the CVP Steering Committee. Current Steering Committee members are:
Steve Schwartz
Dan Bowen-Pope
Joe Beavo
Debbie Nickerson
Fellows may, of course, also bring any issue to the attention of their Department Chair or the Office for Scientific Affairs in the Dean’s Office.
Issues relating to sexual, racial, religious or other conflicts may be brought to the same faculty or to the UW Ombudsman located in HUB 301 or telephone 543-6028 and fax 685-6816.
Obligations
Except for the above minimum
requirements for CVP fellows, we do not require any other additional
requirements beyond those required by the mentors of the fellows in the conduct
of research. In addition, there are the usual reportorial requirements where
fellows are asked to provide a yearly update of their research in one or two
paragraphs as well as their papers, whether published or unpublished, to
coincide with the submission of competitive and non-competitive renewals of the
grants, as well as their commitment to be contacted up to ten years after
terminating their fellowships. These reportorial requirements and personal
updates do not require any complicated preparation of papers but simply
summaries of their work as well as updates of their current information like
positions , addresses, telephones and other professional data.
